AAPI Support for Andrew Yang Grows as prominent AAPI Community Groups Endorse
**RELEASE** May 4th, 2021
New York, NY—Today, prominent Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) groups joined together to endorse Andrew Yang for Mayor of New York City at an event at Hwa Yuan in Chinatown as AAPI support for Andrew’s historic candidacy continues to build.
The endorsements come on the same day a new report revealed the AAPI community is the most underrepresented in American politics. In New York, the representation differential factor is -91.7%, lower than New Jersey and California, among federal, statewide, state legislature, and county offices.
The endorsing groups include the Chang Le America Association, Inc., the Fujian Foundation in the USA, Inc., the United Overseas Fujianese Association of America, the Fukein American Association, the United Fujianese of American, and the United Overseas Fujianese Association of America. The organizations also endorsed Gigi Li for City Council.
Said Andrew Yang, “I’m honored to have the support of these amazing community groups today. The AAPI community is now facing the twin struggles of significant economic hardship and a major rise in hate crimes. As mayor, we are going to help small businesses succeed and make our neighborhoods safer. And doing so as the first Asian American mayor of New York will only add to the significance of what we’re about to achieve for all New Yorkers.”
Throughout the campaign, Andrew has been outspoken on the rise of hate crimes and the struggles AAPI businesses are facing.
Additional endorsements from the AAPI community include Council Member Margaret Chin, Council candidate Gigi Li, Assembly Member Ron Kim, and the New York City Asian-American Democratic Club.
